SoLa Foundation and Michael Latt Legacy Fund Kick Off ‘Art in Action’ Program to Empower Young Artists in South Los Angeles

SoLa Foundation together with the Michael Latt Legacy Fund initiates “Art in Action” to support young artists in a 12-week program to develop their story telling skills.

Los Angeles, CA — The SoLa Foundation, in collaboration with the Michael Latt Legacy Fund, proudly announces the launch of Art in Action: The Michael Latt Artivist Accelerator Program. This innovative 12-week initiative is dedicated to empowering the next generation of creative leaders, providing young artists and changemakers across South Los Angeles with the skills and support they need to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Inspired by the life and legacy of the visionary Michael Latt, Art in Action unites passionate young adults who share a commitment to art and activism. Participants will engage in workshops, mentorship opportunities, and collaborative projects designed to equip them with the tools, confidence, and knowledge necessary to transform their artistic passions into powerful platforms for social change.

During the program’s inaugural week, students were inspired by a heartfelt conversation with Michelle Satter, Michael Latt’s mother. She shared personal insights on courage, self-confidence, and the importance of calculated risk-taking, themes that the students are now incorporating into their community-focused art projects.

Last week featured an enlightening panel discussion on storytelling through film, led by industry titans Emmy-winning director Paris Barclay (known for his work on Scandal, NYPD Blue, and Empire) and award-winning filmmaker Reggie Rock Bythewood (renowned for Shots Fired and The Secret Life of Bees). The students actively participated in an interactive Project Lab, where they applied storytelling techniques to their own work and exchanged constructive feedback with their peers.

Throughout the program, participants will delve into critical topics such as public speaking, branding, social media strategy, and entrepreneurship. They will also benefit from guest lectures by notable figures in the entertainment and creative industries, including Ava DuVernay, Jesse Williams, Nikkolas Smith, and April Reign.

The program is set to culminate in a community art showcase on July 9th at the SoLa Beehive, where students will proudly present their work. Through this accelerator, students are not only learning to tell their unique stories but are also discovering the power of their voices in uplifting and empowering their communities.
